Introduction to Golf

Golf is a complex game that has rather easy rules. While it is easy to understand the concept of golf, mastering the game is difficult and takes some time. Golf has been round in many parts of the world for hundreds of years. Golf has always been known as a sociable game. Today, golf has become a competitive sport, thanks in part to televised tournaments and million dollar winners.

As competitive as golf may seem, it is actually more self-competitive than anything. The golfer is always striving to beat his or her personal best and to complete holes in fewer strokes than the last time. Each hole in golf is assigned a number of strokes that it should take to reach from tee to cup. The shortest holes are par 3 holes, which are 3 shots from tee to hole. This means you should be able to tee off and make it onto the green in your first shot, leaving two shot to putt the ball into the hole. Par 4 and par 5 holes allow 4 and 5 hits respectively. While this is considered par, don't expect to make it in par anytime soon. Even many professionals don't make par and even then they don't make par on every hole. The total of all your swings for each hole is marked on the scorecard. The grand total of all 18 holes is added up at the end. Par is normally 72 strokes.

Most average players try to beat 100. There are various clubs used in golf. In general, the woods are used to tee off for the first shot of each hole. The 1-wood is known as the driver and will hit the ball the furthest distance. A 3 wood and 5 wood hit the ball closer. To hit the ball the furthest you need to hit the ball with the middle of the face of the wood with a solid contact.

The irons are used for play throughout the rest of the hole. The ball may be located on the fairway. Choose an iron to hit the ball towards the green. As with woods, the irons are numbered with the lower numbers hitting further and lower and the higher numbers hitting higher and shorter distances. The face of the irons is angled to provide specific loft and distance. There are various hazards on the golf course such as bunkers (sand traps) and water ponds.

These make it more difficult to reach the goal in par. Try to avoid the hazards when you can. If you hit a ball into the water you will take a penalty stroke and can drop a new ball close to where the ball entered the water. When the ball goes out of bounds you must take a penalty stroke unless you are able to play your ball. If you lose a ball on a hazard or in the rough you may take a stroke penalty and drop another ball near where your ball went out of bounds.

The bunker provides a unique difficulty. Use a sand wedge to loft the ball out and up onto the green. If the ball is close to the green but in the taller rough you can use a pitching wedge to lift the ball out and onto the green. Once the ball is on the green, use your putter to carefully hit the ball into the hole. There are many different golf courses.

There are two main types of golf courses including public and private courses. Public courses are available for public use while private clubs are designed for members of the club only. The cost to play golf can vary greatly. The price per round of 18 holes may be under twenty dollars at a public course or may be more than a hundred dollars at a private club.

Golf courses are typically designed with 18 holes. Some smaller courses are available with only 9 holes. Many golf courses offer golf carts for rent while others are strictly walking-only courses. You can learn more about the course before you play. Golf resorts are hotels that include world-class golf courses. These resorts provide all the amenities that are necessary to golfers and non-golfers alike. Public courses are usually the least expensive and are suitable for daily play.

Golf is a sociable sport and one that will carry you throughout your lifetime. Golf is often played with work colleagues and clients. The game is one that can be played throughout your lifetime. People of any age can play the game, making it a fun sport to play with family, friends, and co-workers. The more you play golf the better your golf skills will become. Golf can be a frustrating game at times because while it looks very easy to do, it is actually difficult to master.
