US blames Apple for 2010 e-book price hike

NEW YORK (AP) ? A U.S. government lawyer opened a civil trial by portraying Apple Inc. as a corporate bully that swaggered into the market for electronic books in 2010, forcing an end to price competition and costing consumers hundreds of millions of dollars.

The Justice Department attorney, Lawrence Buterman, said Monday a dramatic price increase in e-books was "no accident or unforeseen outcome" but the result of a deliberate plan by Apple and five book publishers to eliminate Seattle-based Amazon.com's $9.99 bargain price for popular e-books.

He asked U.S. District Judge Denise Cote, who is overseeing a trial expected to last several weeks, to find that the computer company had violated anti-trust laws.

Apple lawyer Orin Snyder sharply disputed the government's claims, saying the company had been waiting eagerly for its chance to show it had enhanced competition and improved the e-book industry.

"Apple is going to trial because it did nothing wrong," he said. "Apple did not conspire with any publisher individually, collectively or otherwise to raise industry prices."

He called the government's case bizarre, saying: "Even our government is fallible, and sometimes the government just gets it wrong."

Buterman said the scheme to boost prices to $12.99 and $14.99 was encouraged by Steve Jobs, the late founder of the Cupertino, Calif.-based computer giant. The lawyer said he would display emails and other correspondence that showed Jobs was active in the company's efforts to control e-book prices as Apple was preparing to launch the iPad.

The nonjury trial results from a lawsuit last year that accused the company of seeking to enter the market for e-books in 2010 in a way that would guarantee it 30 percent profits. A separate court proceeding could be conducted to quantify harm to consumers.

"Apple's conduct cannot be excused," Buterman said. "Consumers in this country paid hundreds of millions of dollars more for e-books than they would have."

But Snyder said a ruling against Apple would mark the first time in anti-trust law history in which a new entrant in a market was condemned when its presence benefited consumers.

He said Apple entered an "e-book market that was broken, lacked innovation, lacked competition and was heading nowhere good."

He said publishers fought a pricing arrangement that the government said would guarantee Apple 30 percent profits, so it defies logic to insist there was collusion.

"The government is asking your honor to proceed on a perilous path," Snyder said.

The trial's first witness, Kevin Saul, testified that Apple knew publishers were interested in charging higher prices for e-books when it entered the market. He said Apple arranged a different pricing model with publishers than Amazon.com had because Apple realized it would lose money otherwise.

He said Apple was indifferent to how its competitors dealt with publishers.

"We were focused solely on opening an e-books store for Apple," Saul said.

Five publishers named in the lawsuit have settled. The judge had urged Apple to do the same, though she assured Apple a fair trial Monday, saying: "The deck is not stacked against Apple unless the evidence stacks the deck against Apple."

New screening technique paves the way for protein drugs from bacteria

June 5, 2013 ? A cheaper, more efficient technique for developing complex protein drugs from bacteria has been developed at the University of Sheffield.

Using the bacterium E. coli, researchers from the University's Faculty of Engineering showed it was possible to vastly increase the efficiency of the cells producing specifically modified proteins, as well as improve its performance and stability. The modification is present in over two-thirds of human therapeutic drugs on the market and involves the addition of specific sugar groups to the protein backbone, a process termed glycosylation.

Drugs based on proteins are increasingly important in modern medicine to tackle health problems including diabetes, cancer and arthritis.

Although simple proteins are traditionally made in microbial cells, these types of complex drugs are made using animal cells because they can make human-type glycosylations that will control its efficacy and stability in the body, and avoid immunogenic reactions in patients.

Using bacteria to make proteins for use as medicines could be a more cost effective alternative, since using animal cells is expensive. However, the efficiency of glycoprotein production in bacterial cells is still very poor, with yields often several thousand times lower than in animal cells.

Now, researchers in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of Sheffield, with collaboration from the University of Colorado, are using a technique called inverse metabolic engineering, that allows them to screen cells to identify strains that are likely to be the most efficient glycoprotein producers. Using this method, the team were able to produce seven times as much of the protein in laboratory tests.

The team then used mass spectrometry to characterise and accurately quantify the proteins being produced by the bacteria. This allowed them to pinpoint modifications that will enable them, ultimately, to improve the performance of the drug.

Professor Phil Wright, who led the research, said: "We believe that this technique will pave the way for pharmacologists to get the same protein yield from bacteria cells as they could from animal cells and also enable them to produce drugs from bacteria that have vastly improved focus and accuracy."

The team also tested the technique on antibody fragments with positive results, showing that their approach could work in different proteins.

IAEA concerned about finding nothing at Iran site after 'clean-up'

VIENNA (Reuters) - U.N. nuclear investigators may no longer find anything if granted access to Iran's Parchin military site, their chief said on Monday, in view of suspected Iranian efforts to remove any traces of illicit atomic activity there.

Yukiya Amano also said his agency's talks with Iran on unblocking an IAEA inquiry into possible nuclear arms research by Tehran had been "going around in circles" for some time.

Amano was airing unusually blunt criticism that reflected the mounting tension over Iran's disputed nuclear energy program that has increased fears of a new Middle East war.

Israel, widely assumed to be the Middle East's only nuclear-armed state, sees Iran's declared civil nuclear program as the most serious risk to its security and has threatened air strikes if diplomacy and sanctions fail to rein in Tehran.

Amano, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, vented growing frustration at the lack of results in getting Iran to address international concerns. Tehran denies its nuclear energy quest is a disguised bid for atomic bombs.

In hard-hitting comments to the IAEA's 35-nation Board of Governors and later at a news conference, he also said Iranian advances in building a research reactor and in its uranium enrichment work were in "clear contravention" of U.N. Security Council resolutions calling for a suspension in such activities.

The IAEA has been trying since early 2012 to engage with Iran over what the Vienna-based U.N. agency calls the "possible military dimensions" to the country's nuclear program.

But 10 rounds of negotiations in the last 17 months have failed to achieve any breakthrough. Western diplomats accuse Iran of stonewalling the IAEA, an allegation Tehran rejects.

"To be frank, for some time now we have been going around in circles," Amano, a veteran Japanese diplomat, said.

The IAEA's priority has been to gain access to Parchin, a sprawling military compound where it believes Iran may have carried out explosives tests applicable to developing a nuclear weapon, possibly a decade ago. Iran denies this.

But Amano acknowledged for the first time that "extensive activities" by Iran - including removal of soil and asphalting - now meant inspectors may return empty-handed even if Iran were to allow them to visit. Iran says Parchin is a conventional military site and has dismissed the cleansing allegations.

"It may no longer be possible to find anything," he said, adding, however, that the IAEA still wanted to go to Parchin.

IRAN REACTOR WORRIES WEST

Amano spoke at a time of apparent deadlock in a broader diplomatic initiative by six world powers to find a peaceful solution to the decade-old dispute over Iran's nuclear ambitions. Western diplomats say they are awaiting the outcome of Iran's June 14 presidential election but still do not anticipate any notable rollback from its nuclear defiance.

Iran, a big oil producer now under harsh Western sanctions against its lifeblood export sector, says its nuclear program aims to meet the electricity needs of a rapidly growing population and advance some areas of scientific research.

But its refusal to suspend nuclear activity with both civilian and potential military applications in defiance of U.N. Security Council demands, and its lack of full openness with the IAEA, have fuelled suspicions abroad about its ultimate goals.

"Iran is not providing the necessary cooperation to enable us to provide credible assurance about the absence of undeclared nuclear material and activities," Amano said.

Western and Israeli worries about Iran are focused largely on its uranium enrichment work, as such material refined to a high level can provide the fissile core of an atomic bomb.

But diplomats and experts say a heavy water research reactor being built near the town of Arak could give Iran an alternative ingredient - plutonium - for nuclear bombs, if it were to decide to build such weapons of mass destruction.

An IAEA report issued to member states last month showed the Islamic Republic pressing ahead with the construction of Arak, including the delivery to the site of the reactor vessel.

"Iran continues to advance its heavy water-related projects," Amano said. The lack of updated design information about the plant "is having an increasingly adverse impact on our ability to ... implement an effective safeguards approach."

A butterflied pork tenderloin is stuffed with saut?ed mushrooms, pear, shallots and sage, then grilled both indirectly and directly.

Grilling season has begun. The pear stuffing to this pork tenderloin adds a slightly sweet note that plays nicely with the savory flavors.

We?re experiencing the season?s first real bout?of don?t-heat-up-the-kitchen weather here in Chicago. So this weekend, I fired up the grill. For my inaugural grilled meat meal of the year, I turned to a recipe inspired by one of our favorite vegetarians. You may remember the recent?vegetarian pasta dish?based on a side served by our friend Laura. Well, even though she doesn?t eat meat, she knows how to cook it.

Two elemental flavors come together beautifully in this recipe. With two cups of chopped mushrooms, the filling delivers a delicious, earthy taste. And a combination of indirect and direct grilling adds plenty of smokiness to the pork tenderloin.

The pear adds a slightly sweet note that plays nicely with pork. And sage and pork? What?s not to like? Laura didn?t grill her wonderful stuffed tenderloin; she pan seared it, then roasted it in the oven. Many recipes call for this approach ? in fact, that had been my plan until temperatures started rising. Either method produces delicious results, but I?m happy with what the smoke brought to the party.

Grilled pork tenderloin stuffed with mushrooms and pear?

Serves 4

6 ounces mushrooms (I used cremini ? buttons are also fine)

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 large shallot, chopped (or 1 medium onion and a minced clove of garlic)

1 pear, peeled and diced

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

1 generous tablespoon chopped fresh sage (or 1 teaspoon dried)

1 pork tenderloin, 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 pounds

Special equipment: pieces of kitchen twine, soaked in water

1. Slice and/or chop the mushrooms (I bought sliced mushrooms and chopped the larger slices into smaller pieces). You should have a generous two cups of mushrooms when finished.

2. Heat the butter and olive oil in a large saut? pan over medium flame.

3. Add mushrooms, shallot, and pear to skillet and toss to coat with butter and oil. Season with salt and pepper and cook for 12 to 15 minutes, stirring frequently to avoid overly browning the shallot.

4. Add sage and cook until fragrant, about 45 seconds. Remove from heat and set aside.

5.?If you?re working with a charcoal grill (I was), start your coals now and prepare the tenderloin (step 6). When the coals and the meat are both ready, set up your grill for indirect grilling, pouring the coals on one side. If you?re using a gas grill, set it up for indirect grilling (he said, having no idea how you do that).

6. Butterfly the pork tenderloin, slicing it down the middle lengthwise without cutting all the way through. Open the tenderloin like a book on a cutting board and cover with plastic wrap. Using the side of a meat mallet or a medium-sized heavy saucepan, pound it until it is about 1/2-inch thick, work from the center to the edges of the tenderloin.

7. Arrange the mushroom filling down the middle of the tenderloin lengthwise, spreading it evenly. Starting with a long side, roll the tenderloin as tightly as possible. Tie it in 4 places with the twine and trim off the loose ends (this will reduce the chance of the twine catching fire on the grill).

8. Brush the tenderloin with oil and season with salt and pepper on all sides.

9. Lightly brush the grill with oil and lay the tenderloin on the side not over the coals.

10. Cover the grill (with vents open) and let it cook for 20 minutes, turning the tenderloin at the halfway mark. Move the tenderloin over the coals and cover the grill. Cook for another 10 to 15 minutes, turning once, or until an instant read thermometer registers 140 degrees F. when inserted in the center. Transfer to a platter or cutting board and tent with foil. Let the tenderloin rest for about 5 minutes and then slice crosswise into medallions. Serve. (Make sure no one gets a piece of twine.)

Kitchen Notes

As you can see from the photo above, I didn?t achieve the classic spiral of filling. To do so, chop the mushrooms and the pear finer and spread the filling a little thinner on the butterflied tenderloin. Maybe be a little less generous with the filling as well. As it was, I liked the chunkier bits of filling ? both their appearance and their individual pops of flavor ? as we ate.

Congressmen find few Boston attack clues in Russia

MOSCOW (AP) ? The head of a U.S. congressional delegation said Sunday that its meetings in Russia showed there was "nothing specific" that could have helped prevent the Boston Marathon bombings, but that the two countries need to work more closely on joint security threats.

Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, a California Republican who led the six-member delegation, described discussions with Russian parliament members and security officials as productive. Some of the meetings, he said, were made possible by American actor Steven Seagal.

Seagal, who attended the news conference in the U.S. Embassy, is well connected in Russia. He met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in March, and last week paid a visit to Ramzan Kadyrov, the strongman who rules Chechnya, a province in southern Russia that has seen two brutal wars between federal troops and Chechen separatists since 1994.

Those wars spawned an Islamic insurgency that spread across the Caucasus region, including to neighboring Dagestan, now the center of the violence. Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who is accused of carrying out the Boston bombings with his younger brother, spent six months in Dagestan last year. Investigators have been trying to determine whether he had contacts with the militants there.

Rep. Steve King said Russian security officials told the delegation they believed that Tsarnaev and his mother had been radicalized before moving to the United States in 2003. "I suspect he was raised to do what he did," said King, a Republican from Iowa.

His account of the meeting at the FSB, the successor to the Soviet-era KGB, was disputed by Rep. Steven Cohen, a Tennessee Democrat, who said he understood that the radicalization took place much later, when the family was living in Boston.

Rohrabacher said a higher level of cooperation between the United States and Russia is necessary to keep people safe in both countries. "Radical Islam is at our throat in the United States, and is at the throat of the Russian people," he said.

The congressman repeatedly thanked Seagal, who took credit for arranging the congressmen's meeting at the FSB, and said it helped avoid the experience of past foreign trips when all of the meetings had been arranged by the U.S. Embassy.

"You know what we got? We got the State Department controlling all the information that we heard," Rohrabacher said. "You think that's good for democracy? No way!"

The action movie star escorted the congressmen on a trip Saturday to the site of a terrorist attack in the Caucasus town of Beslan, where militants seized a school in 2004 and took more than 1,000 people hostage, most of them children. More than 330 hostages died, most of them when federal troops stormed the school.

Seagal had invited the delegation to visit Chechnya, but the trip was called off in part because U.S. House rules would have prevented the congressmen from flying on his private plane, Rohrabacher said.

The Kremlin has given Kadyrov lavish funding and political carte blanche to fight terrorism since he came to power in 2005. Activists accuse him and his feared security forces of staggering abuses, including torture, kidnappings and murder.

"All these accusations are thrown around," said Seagal, who was given a lavish welcome in Kadyrov's palace. "Is there any evidence? Has he been indicted?"

Cohen said he had refused to go to Chechnya for these reasons. But Rohrabacher, who chairs the U.S. Foreign Affairs' Subcommittee on Europe, Eurasia and Emerging Threats, said the United States should be more understanding of the threats facing Kadyrov and Putin.

"If you are in the middle of an insurrection with Chechnya, and hundreds of people are being killed and there are terrorist actions taking place and kids are being blown up in schools, yeah, guess what, there are people who overstep the bounds of legality," he said.

While the rule of law is important, Rohrabacher added, "We shouldn't be describing people who are under this type of threat, we shouldn't be describing them as if they are Adolf Hitler or they're back to the old Communism days."

Rohrabacher and King were full of praise for Russian Orthodox Christian traditions after attending a service at Moscow's main cathedral on Sunday morning. The cathedral became a rallying point for Putin supporters and the opposition alike last year when punk group Pussy Riot staged an impromptu protest against Putin's merging of church and state, earning them worldwide notoriety and a two-year prison sentence for "hooliganism."

"It's hard to find sympathy for people who would do that to people's faith," King said.

The United States and European Union have condemned the jailing of the Pussy Riot members.

Rohrabacher, however, lamenting the "sinister way" U.S. politicians discuss Russia and Putin, said he wished they would have more appreciation for the changes that have taken place.

"Most of my friends in Congress don't even know that the churches are open now," he said.

The congressional delegation also included Michele Bachmann, but she made no public appearances and left before Sunday's news conference. The Minnesota Republican arrived in Russia last week shortly after announcing that she would not seek reelection in 2014.

Blow to Egyptian regime: Court rules legislature illegally elected

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's highest court ruled on Sunday that the nation's Islamist-dominated legislature and constitutional panel were illegally elected, dealing a serious blow to the legal basis of the Islamists' hold on power.

The ruling by the Supreme Constitutional Court says that the legislature's upper house, the only one currently sitting, would not be dissolved until the parliament's lower chamber is elected later this year or early in 2014. The constitutional panel has already dissolved after completing the charter.

The ruling deepens the political instability that has gripped the country since the overthrow of authoritarian leader Hosni Mubarak more than two years ago.

The same court ruled to dissolve parliament's lower chamber in June, a move that led to the promotion of the normally toothless upper chamber, the Shura Council, to becoming a law-making house. The Shura Council, long derided as nothing more than a talk shop, was elected by about seven percent of the electorate last year.

It was not immediately clear whether the ruling on the 100-member constitutional panel would impact in any way on the charter it drafted. The constitution was adopted in a nationwide vote in December with a relatively low turnout of about 35 percent.

But even if it does not, the ruling will question the legal foundations of the disputed charter pushed through by allies of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi in an all-night session late last year. Critics say the charter restricts freedoms and gives clerics a say in legislation. The Islamists who drafted it hail the document as the best one Egypt has ever had.

In what appeared to be an attempt to remove any confusion over the ruling, Morsi's office issued a brief statement in which it emphasized that all state institutions must respect the constitution, that the Shura Council will continue to function as the nation's legislature and that the president will ensure that all the branches of state are fully functioning.

Regardless of its consequences on the ground, Sunday's ruling is likely to prolong the polarizing political transition that followed Mubarak's overthrow. Rival political groups disagree not just on policies and the future course of the nation but on the legitimacy of the basic institutions of government.

It will give heart to the mostly secular and liberal opposition, while providing fresh ammunition to the argument often repeated by the president's supporters that the judiciary is filled with Mubarak loyalists determined to derail the nation's political process.

Morsi, elected nearly a year ago, tried to reinstate parliament's lower chamber just days after he came to office on June 30 but eventually bowed to the court ruling and backed down.

In both rulings on parliament's two chambers, the court contended that political parties that fielded candidates for the third of seats set aside for independent candidates, as allowed by the election law, amounted to a breach of the principle of fairness.

The Shura Council's critics say it is ill-equipped to be the nation's sole law-making body, and complain that it's considering legislation that will have a far reach into the future rather than simply pass what is absolutely necessary during the transition period.

Of the chamber's 270 members, 180 were elected, and Morsi appointed the other 90. Five percent of its members are Christians ? about half the proportion of the population ? and four percent are women.

When Shura Council elections were held in early 2012, not only did many voters stay away but so did many political parties ? especially several of the newborn liberal groups with smaller budgets. Over 70 percent of the seats were won by Islamists.

The court on Sunday also ruled unconstitutional clauses in a 1958 law giving the president far-reaching powers under a state of emergency. The invalidated clauses allowed suspects to be arrested with little recourse and placed restrictions on the freedoms of movement and assembly.

The ruling comes ahead of the scheduled climax on June 30 ? the president's first anniversary in office ? of a campaign by anti-government protesters to collect 15 million signatures of Egyptians who want to see Morsi leave office.

Morsi has yet to say whether he intends to take any action against the campaign or its organizers, who plan to stage a mass protest outside his Cairo palace on June 30. But the president's supporters have denounced as illegal the campaign, called Tamarod, or "Rebel," and there have been several street scuffles between the two sides.

Week in review: Tim Cook and Google at D11, Star Wars, TM13 and more!

Things are starting to ramp up as we head towards the summer, and one of the biggest stories to hit iMore this week was launch of Talk Mobile 2013, a cross site event spanning the whole of Mobile Nations. We were also treated to yet more news from Google, Tim Cook onstage at the D11 conference, some big name game releases and some excellent reviews and editorials from the writing staff. Let's look back on the week that was!

We'll start though, with music. At the very start of the week we examined what Apple could do with the rumored iRadio service should it ever emerge. While Apple doesn't need to enter the streaming space at all, they could quite possibly do a really fantastic job with it. They do after all have a huge iTunes database of their customers musical choices.

While iRadio is the rumor that won't go away, Google is the rich uncle that keeps on giving us presents. SVP of Chrome and Android, Sundar Pichai, dropped a little bombshell during his appearance at D11 in California; Google Play Music All Access is headed to iOS. Better yet, engineers are supposedly working frantically to bring it to the platform in a matter of weeks. Currently there's unofficial methods to trying out the service on iOS, and we took one of them, gMusic, for a spin.

Google wasn't the only big name in mobile present at D11. Apple's own CEO Tim Cook opened the conference with his interview with Walt and Kara. While we wouldn't ever expect any news of new products, Cook did fill us in on some statistics for Apple TV, announce a new addition to the senior team, and express his interest in wearable technology. It was a great interview to follow, and if you missed it first time round be sure to check out our full roundup.

This week saw some big name game titles hit the App Store, too. The Nintendo classic Ace Attorney: Phoenix Wright Trilogy made a much awaited appearance, as did an RPG classic; Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic. Neither game comes cheap, with the full Ace Attorney pack costing $16.99 and SWKotR $9.99. Both are premium titles, and have been reworked to play on the touchscreen. Away from mobile gaming, I showed you how to hook up your Xbox 360 controller to your Mac. Since the Feral bundle dropped I've been playing games on my Mac a lot more, but the keyboard is too cramped. With an Xbox controller laying around and a few minutes of your time you can be on your way to gamepad Mac gaming heaven.

Two drone strikes kill seven in southern Yemen-local official

ADEN (Reuters) - Two drone strikes killed seven suspected al Qaeda militants in southern Yemen on Saturday, a local official said, nine days after U.S. President Barack Obama said he would only use such strikes when a threat was "continuing and imminent".

In two separate attacks, militants believed to be linked to al Qaeda killed two senior police officers in the eastern part of the country, a local security official said.

Washington views al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) as the movement's most dangerous wing after it attempted to launch bomb attacks on international airliners.

The official said the seven were travelling in two cars on Saturday morning in the al-Mahfad district of Abyan Governorate in southern Yemen where the Islamist militant group has a strong presence, when the drones struck.

In eastern Yemen, Colonel Abdel-Rahman Bashkeel, head of the criminal investigation department in the city of Seyoun in the Wadi Hadramout area, was killed on Saturday afternoon by a bomb placed in his car, a local security official said.

Militants on a motorbike also shot and killed Brigadier-General Yahya al-Omaisi, commander of the police force at the Seyoun airbase, the official said.

He said both attacks carried the hallmarks of al Qaeda, which is believed to be behind a spate of recent attacks on senior police, security and army officers, including at least three incidents last week.

Islamists linked to al Qaeda seized control of some towns in southern Yemen in 2011 after Arab Spring protests weakened the government in Sanaa. However, the Yemeni army and local tribal militias recaptured the towns last year with U.S. assistance.

Lawless, impoverished Yemen lies on major international energy shipment routes and shares a long, porous border with Saudi Arabia, the world's top oil exporter.

President Obama has come under criticism in the United States for his government's use of drone strikes which have led to civilian casualties.

He said in a speech on May 23 that the Defense Department would now take the lead in launching lethal drone strikes from the Central Intelligence Agency, meaning there would be more Congressional oversight of the program.

MSI refreshes its GT and GE gaming laptops, teases a new 14-inch model (hands-on)

MSI's had a busy couple weeks: first it started selling a pair of laptops with AMD chips inside, and then it unveiled a flagship notebook with Haswell. Now, to complete the trilogy, the company's refreshing the other models in its range. Starting with the GT series, the existing GT70 and GT60 are both getting a quad-core, 3.2GHz Core i7-4200MQ CPU with a 4GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX780M GPU or a 3GB GTX770M. Though the chipsets are the same, however, the 17-incher makes room for more robust internals, including a max of 32GB of RAM and a 1TB HDD paired with up to three 128GB SSDs arranged in a RAID 0 setup. The 15-inch version, meanwhile, tops out at 16GB of RAM with a single 128GB SSD and 1TB hard drive. If 8.6 or even 7.7 pounds is too heavy for yours tastes, you might prefer the slim GE series, where both the 15- and 17-inch models weigh in at less than six pounds. In exchange for a lighter design, of course, you get slightly inferior specs: a 2GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX765 GPU, 750GB hard drives, 8GB to 12GB of RAM and six-cell batteries, compared with a nine-cells on the beefier GT models. For what it's worth, though, most configurations have the same 3.2GHz Core i7 processor. Additionally, the GE notebooks have been refreshed with backlit keyboards, but you still won't get the full rainbow effect as on the GTs. All are available now. In the US, at least, starting prices are as follows: $1,500 for the GT70 and GT60, $1,400 for the GE70 and $1,000 for the GE60.

Finally, MSI is also showing off a 14-inch model, the GE40, which has an altogether different industrial design than the other GEs, with small red lights on the lid meant to look like devil's eyes. (Or wings. Whatever.) At 4.4 pounds and 1.14 inch thick, it's an obvious competitor to the Alienware M14x. No word yet on pricing or availability, but MSI has preliminarily said it will boast a 2.9GHz Core i7-4702MQ CPU, 2GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760M GPU, 8GB of RAM and a battery rated for three hours. The screen will be a 1,600 x 900 non-IPS panel with an anti-glare matte finish. Storage-wise, you're looking at a 128GB and 750GB SSD, or just the 750-gig HDD. Again, MSI hasn't said when it'll ship, but for now we've got hands on-photos of the GE40 (and those other machines, too) after the break.

Psychiatrist, psychologist and other medical professionals; inspirational and motivational speakers and authors; pastors and teachers alike have proven that you attract into your life whatever is in alignment with your dominant thoughts and emotions. Scientists believe that humans have an average of 70,000 thoughts per day?that?s almost 49 thoughts per minute. With this many thoughts racing across your mind is it possible to control which thought will get your attention the most? Sure it is!

The Bible teaches to ask for, seek out, and knock on the door of opportunities. The church refers to this as faith. The metaphysical profession hypothesize that our thoughts manifest. Metaphysicians believe that we live in a parallel reality as spiritual beings having a natural experience in the body. Because of such we can literally speak our thoughts and these words will eventually materialize. And as parents we teach our children that ?if you don?t have anything nice to say then don?t say anything at all?. Why, because we know that hurtful words from our childhood still haunt us today and we prefer that our children never experience such.

Well here?s the good news: it is impossible to control all of your thoughts. This is good news because you would have a nervous breakdown trying to focus each one of the 70,000 thoughts that fill your brain each day. Most of your thoughts are unconscious and the only ones that manifest are the ones you focus on the most.

Your thoughts control your emotions. Your emotions determine the direction of your life because most people tend to move in the direction of how they feel. And the direction you take determines where you?ll end up.

The dominant thoughts that manifest in your life are the ones that are complimented by the emotions associated with them. For example: if as a child your mom (in a fit of rage and anger) often said to you that you will end up just like your alcoholic father; the emotions you felt during her outburst ?wired? you in a way that caused fear in your heart and mind. As time progressed you may have tried several times to never end up like your alcoholic dad and have failed. This debilitating thought and the emotion of fear caused you to attract a lifestyle that mimicked your father?s.

Or let?s say as an elementary student your music teacher helped you discover your talent for playing the piano. The teacher along with your parents celebrated and reassured you of this gift which allowed you to feel good about yourself. The positive vibrations you felt while playing the piano inspired you to practice and perfect your gift. By being able to fully express your talent with constructive statements and positive emotions you expanded your gift into a successful career as a concert pianist.

So how do you control which thoughts dominate your mind and emotions so that you attract ONLY what you want to manifest in your life.

1. Write down the 3 most negative thoughts that you have about yourself, ???? and then reword these thoughts into something more constructive.

Negative Thought Example: I am fat and I hate how I look.

Positive Thought Example: I am in the process of learning all that I need to know to attract my ideal weight and fitness goals.

2. Make a list of 25 things that you like and love about yourself.

If you can?t think of 25 things that you like about yourself then ask for the help of your closest friends, associates and family members. Be sure to ask those you truly believe will give you positive feedback. Learning what positive issues others think and feel about you will raise your vibrations (emotions) which will help you manifest more positive outlooks about you.

3. Read self-help books and watch inspirational television.

Many of the 70,000 thoughts that come across your mind each day are other people?s thoughts, and from what enter into your vibrations through your five senses. Be very vigilant of what you see, hear, taste, smell and feel?the life you live literally depends on it!

4. Pray and meditate

Now that you have rewritten those three most negative thoughts that plague your mind, made your list of 25 things that you like about yourself, and reading self-improvement books and watching inspirational programs; it is imperative that you quiet your mind through prayer and meditation. Praying is your way of talking to God, and meditation is God?s way of talking to you.

Damage checks begin after deadly Midwest twisters

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) ? Emergency officials set out Saturday morning to see how much damage a violent burst of thunderstorms and tornadoes caused as it swept across the Midwest overnight, killing at least five and injuring dozens.

The storm toppled cars and left commuters trapped on an interstate highway as it bore down during Friday's evening rush hour near Oklahoma City. The National Weather Service reported "several" tornadoes rolled in from the prairie, terrifying towns along their paths.

The storms brought another tense day for a region still reeling from the recent top-of-the-scale EF5 tornado that struck the Oklahoma City suburb of Moore on May 20, killing 24 and decimating neighborhoods. Many said they took severe weather warnings issued during the day Friday seriously.

As the storm bore down on suburban Oklahoma City, Adrian Lillard, 28, of The Village, went to the basement of her mother's office building with a friend, her nieces, nephews and two dogs.

"My brother's house was in Moore, so it makes you take more immediate action," Lillard said while her young nieces played on a blanket on the floor of the parking garage. "We brought toys and snacks to try our best to keep them comfortable."

Storm chasers with cameras in their cars transmitted video showing a number of funnels dropping from the supercell thunderstorm as it passed south of El Reno and into Oklahoma City just south of downtown. As the cell advanced, police urged motorists to leave I-40 and seek a safe place.

Violent weather also moved through the St. Louis area, ripping part of the roof off a suburban casino. Early aerial images of the storm's damage showed homes with porches ripped away, roofs torn off and piles of splintered wood scattered across the ground for blocks. Officials in St. Charles County also reported that local schools suffered some damage.

Among the five dead were a mother and a baby found in a vehicle in Oklahoma. Amy Elliott, a spokeswoman for the state medical examiner, said early Saturday that she had no immediate word of additional fatalities. At least 75 people were hurt, five critically, hospital officials said.

Meteorologists had warned about particularly nasty weather Friday but said the storm's fury didn't match that of the tornado that struck Moore. The Friday storm, however, brought with it much more severe flooding. It dumped around 7 inches of rain on Oklahoma City in the span of a few hours and made the tornado difficult to spot for motorists trying to beat it home, said Bruce Thoren, a meteorologist with National Weather Service in Norman.

"Some tornadoes are wrapped in rain, so it's basically impossible to see, which is extremely dangerous," Thoren said. "Somebody driving along really not familiar with what's going on can basically drive into it."

The heavy rain and hail hampered rescue efforts in Oklahoma City. Frequent lightning roiled the skies well after the main threat had moved east. Highways and streets were clogged late into the night as motorists worked their way around flooded portions of the city.

Will Rogers World Airport said flights wouldn't resume until later Saturday, after debris was cleared from runways.

Emergency officials reported that numerous injuries occurred in the area along I-40, and Randolph said there were toppled and wrecked cars littering the area. Troopers requested a number of ambulances at I-40 near Yukon, west of Oklahoma City.

Standing water was several feet deep, and in some places it looked more like a hurricane had passed through than a tornado. More than 86,000 utility customers were without power.

Among the injured was Weather Channel meteorologist Mike Bettes, who suffered minor injuries when his "tornado hunt" SUV that he and two photographers were riding in was thrown 200 yards by a twister. The Weather Channel said all of the people in the vehicle were able to walk away, and that it was the first time a network personality was injured in a storm.

In Missouri, the combination of high water and fallen power lines closed dozen of roads, snarling traffic on highways and side streets in the St. Louis area. At the Hollywood Casino in suburban of Maryland Heights, gamblers rushed from the floor as a storm blew out windows and tore off part of the roof.

Rich Gordon, of Jefferson City, said he was on the casino floor when he heard a loud "boom."

"I didn't know if it was lightning or what, but it was loud," Gordon said.

The U.S. averages more than 1,200 tornadoes a year and most are relatively small. Of the 60 EF5 tornadoes to hit since 1950, Oklahoma and Alabama have been hit the most ? seven times each.

Friday evening's weather came after flash flooding and tornadoes killed three people in Arkansas late Thursday and early Friday. Three others were missing in floods that followed 6 inches of rain in the rugged Ouachita Mountains near Y City, 125 miles west of Little Rock.

This spring's tornado season got a late start, with unusually cool weather keeping funnel clouds at bay until mid-May. The season usually starts in March and then ramps up for the next couple of months.

Family Home and Life: Save Time Doing Laundry, My Version

Laundry can be quite boring so hang with me here ok??How many times do you have to go around to different rooms in your house putting clean laundry away? How many times in a week do you open a set of drawers to stash underwear and socks? How many times have you re-folded clothing because it didn't get put away, or re-washed something because it was too wrinkled from not being folded and put away? Or, re-washed a whole load?because?you forgot to put it in the dryer?

Oh, you haven't counted? Well, saving time and effort is something I take seriously, so I have counted ;o) ?No just kidding, I don't have an actual number but being aware of how I do things around the house and then working on stream lining the process gives me more time to do things I want to do like write this!?


We often over estimate the amount of time it takes to do a chore. That being said, chores do take time. It takes less time to do it right though, than to re-do it. We all have to do laundry. Discipline yourself to do it right and spend the time you gain doing something you enjoy. Here's how I save time doing laundry. Oh and -YES- I know what it is like having kids running all over the house while you are trying to do your chores. Not only is it possible to clean while the kids are around, it's good for them to see you do it. Good habits are caught.?

Do it once a week. I have found that doing laundry once a week works the best for me, and I do it over a weekend. Because I know I will be doing laundry on the weekend I plan when I will have the biggest time block and start it then. I?separate?all the laundry into piles that I want to wash together and then when a load is finished, it gets dumped onto my bed.?(often I will?separate?it on a Friday night and throw in a load to get a head start, choosing a load that won't wrinkle in the dryer)??When it's out of the dryer, I spread out the items to be hung on top of each other to prevent wrinkling, and into different groups....one for each family member.

Fold on your bed or table, not the sofa. I always dump my clean laundry on my bed. It makes a nice large folding surface, plenty of room for?separating?into piles, and it has an added bonus for?procrastinators. You need to put the laundry away before you can sleep in your bed! There are times I forget I haven't put it all away and I am dead tired and walk into my room and there it is. But it only takes minutes to deal with and beats all the extra time it would take me if I dumped it else where to be re-folded and put away another time.

Pick a method that works for you. When I was a young single mom doing laundry for my kids I even had an order that I washed the clothes in. First, I would wash all pants and shorts. Then, all tops, and finally, all whites as that was were the most underwear and socks would be. I would fold each load of laundry as it came from the dryer right away eliminating the chance of wrinkling.?

Pants and shorts were put into groups for each person. Next came tops and colored underwear. The folded tops would be placed on top of the folded pants and shorts. Then the socks and underwear on the very top of the pile. The pile would then go to bedrooms to be put away.?Each sock drawer, underwear drawer, etc; would be opened one time for the week to put laundry away.

Towels and sheets are always washed?separately?mostly because the weight of them can wrinkle lighter weight clothing. These items I can wash during the week?because?they will not require going to different rooms for each load to put them away. I always wash and put back on my bed the same sheets until I am ready for a change in color or season. That saves time on folding too.?

I like to lay all tops, like t-shirts, to be hung on top of each other facing the same way. It is easy then to insert a hanger, fold the top down and insert a hanger in the next shirt. Then they can all be taken to the closet in one easy sweep.?

Here is a silly but effective time saver.?One day when the older kids were entering pre-teen years, I realized I was spending a lot of time turning dirty laundry right side out. So began a rule that I still use. If you don't turn it right side out before it goes into the laundry, then you will turn it right side out before you wear it the next time. I would leave it wrong side out, wash and dry it, fold and put it away wrong-side-out. I still do that, ask my husband, rule applies to him too!?

If the kids had a stain on their clothes, it was their?responsibility?to put stained items into separate?laundry basket I used just for stained clothes. That way I would know to look at and pre-treat each piece before?laundering.

There you have it, how I save myself time, energy, money by not re-washing and drying, not needing to iron as much, space not having dirty laundry everywhere,?embarrassment?having someone drop in and having clean laundry all over but not folded, no frustration?because?I have clean socks when I need them, and I don't need a lot of?unnecessary?clothing items because I have plenty of clean things in my closet.
